August 13, 2016 The relatively new privacy industry has so far been immune to the gender bias that permeates many other fields, according to data from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). While sexism continues to be a problem across many related professions - consider the lack of women on boards, the sexist courtroom dialog, and Silicon Valley’s gender bias - the privacy field appears to be a rare beacon of gender equity.
Things Are Looking Up for Women at DEFCON, But Problems Still Linger
August 9, 2016 (Las Vegas, NV) The annual gathering of the world’s top hackers, DEF CON, was a double-sided coin when it came to gender issues at the majority male event. At its best, this year’s DEF CON attracted more women, and more women appeared as contestants at DEF CON or DEF CON-related challenges, than ever before, according to many attendees. Jennifer Steffens, CEO of cybersecurity solutions provider IOActive, said that this year’s DEF CON was “one of the most inclusive events” for women she has attended in her many years of attendance. “Even men are calling it out.”

June 27, 2016 Kristin Parke knows not to play with handcuffs unless she has a key within easy reach. Kristin, a security consultant and alumna of Hackbright Academy (a software-engineering school for women), was one of 60 women to attend a lockpicking workshop in San Francisco put on by Women in Security and Privacy (WISP). In addition to Kristin, a white-hat hacker and penetration tester by day, I met law students, professionals and techies while learning about delay mechanisms and lock design at the one-day workshop that SFGate dubbed one of the weirdest classes in the Bay Area.
